HARDY Alfred J., Sr., 92 of Somerville April 3, 2018. Beloved husband of the late Claire (Killeen). Son of the late Mary (McDermott) and Walter Hardy. Devoted father of Alfred, Jr., Stephen, Thomas, Diane Rayner, Claire Whalen, Patricia Benoit, Colleen Corey, the late Barbara Nicholas, Donna, James, Timothy and John Hardy. Loving grandfather of 30, great-grandfather of 27 and great-great grandfather of many. Brother of Francis and George Hardy, the late Mary O'Brien, Irene Miscavage, Walter, Edward, Robert, William, James and John Hardy. Born in Boston he grew up in Somerville. He left high school at age 18 to join the Army during WWII, serving with the 284th Combat Engineers. He was severely wounded on March 17, 1945 by a V-2 rocket while defending the Ludendorff Bridge (The Bridge at Remagen) and was awarded the Purple Heart. Mr. Hardy was a former employee of the B & M Railroad and also a 32 year employee of the City of Somerville. He was a member of James A. Logan Post , VFW Post 388 and the Somerville City Club. He was awarded his Somerville High School diploma in 2000 in honor of his service to his country. Funeral from the Donovan-Aufiero Funeral Home, 140 Otis St., CAMBRIDGE Saturday at 9 AM followed by a Rite of Christian Burial in St. Joseph Church, Union Sq., Somerville at 10 AM. Visiting Friday 3-7 PM. Interment Holy Cross Cemetery.
