Alfred Thomas Aitkens Oil company executive, hole-in-one golfer, and parishioner at Catholic churches in Edison and Naples, Fla., 89 Alfred Thomas Aitkens, our beloved Daddy/ Dad/GAR /Gramps, 89, passed away peacefully on March 16, 2018, in Palm Coast, Fla. He was immensely bright, incredibly generous and always there to help his family. He will be dearly missed and remain forever in our hearts. He was born on April 12, 1928 in Englewood, N.J., the second of four children to Alfred John and Catherine Rita (Bowers) Aitkens. Alfred grew up in Fort Lee, N.J., and graduated from Fort Lee High School in 1946. He loved sports, was a standout basketball player and captain of the team. Following high school, Alfred enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1946 and was honorably discharged in 1947. He earned an accounting degree from Pace University, which he attended evenings while working full time. Most of his professional career was spent at Amerada Petroleum Corporation and later Hess Corporation, after the merger of the two companies. He retired from Hess in 1986 as vice president and controller. Alfred married Margaret (Koma) in 1951 in Cliffside Park, N.J. They were happily married for over 66 years. For several years, Alfred was a volunteer firefighter with the Fort Lee Volunteer Fire Department, Engine Company No.4. He was a longtime active parishioner of St. Helena Church in Edison, N.J., and Saint Elizabeth Seton Catholic Church in Naples, Fla. He was also a longtime member of Metuchen Country Club in Metuchen, N.J., and the Foxfire Country Club in Naples, Fla. He was an avid golfer (maintaining a single digit handicap for many years and scoring three holes-in-one), enjoyed traveling the world and spending time with family and friends. Alfred was preceded in death by his parents and sister, June Sauer. Alfred is survived by his wife, Margaret, of Palm Coast, Fla.; his children, Joyce Aitkens of Palm Coast, Fla.; Patricia (Jorge) Caballero of Long Valley, N.J.; Robert (Susan) Aitkens of Readington, N.J.; Laura (Patrick) Keane of Palm Coast, Fla., and Theresa (Leon) Deane of Hillsborough, N.J. He also leaves his sister, Sugar (Ted) Jachera of Marco Island, Fla.; his brother, William Aitkens of Bergenfield, N.J.; his grandchildren, Patrick, Nicholas, Meghan, Daniel, Scott, Ryan, Timothy, Alexander, Rachel, Thomas and Jenna; great-grandchildren, Aiden and Aria; and his nieces and nephews and other relatives. A memorial service will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, 4600 Belle Terre Parkway, Palm Coast, Fla. at 9:30 a.m. on April 13, 2018. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the church, at 10:30 a.m., followed by a repast. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Fort Lee Fire Palisade Company No.4, 4 Brinkerhoff Ave., Fort Lee, N.J. 07024. Please include "In Memory of Alfred T. Aitkens."
