Allen Lloyd Jogerst
1928-2017
Allen "Yogi" Lloyd Jogerst, a long-time Houston resident, passed away Wednesday, October 11, 2017. Yogi was born on October 28, 1928, in Freeport, Illinois, the only child of Myrtle Evelyn Gettemy Jogerst and Lloyd Allen Jogerst. Yogi grew up in Freeport and attended Freeport High School. After graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army where he served for two years in post-war Japan. Following his military service, he attended Beloit College in Beloit, Wisconsin. While at Beloit, Yogi met his wife Barbara Ivy. He was a member of the swim team and joined Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity.
He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952, then headed to Texas where he launched his career as a petroleum landman. In this role, he worked for the Continental Oil Company, John S. Ivy, Florida Gas Exploration, and Goldman Sachs Oil and Gas Company. He was a lifetime member of the American Petroleum Landmen's Association, and later served as a Director of the LJM Corporation and the Moran Corporation, oil and gas firms. In 1992, Yogi was elected a trustee of the W.T. and Louise J. Moran Foundation.
Yogi was known for his civic engagement and his many contributions to his community. His involvement ranged from volunteering at the local polling station during elections to leadership roles in his neighborhood civic club; he dutifully served as a Grand Jury member. His legacy as the "Mayor of the Park" at Memorial Park will be a lasting one. At the Park, he knew everyone and was recognized as the one who made sure things were taken care of properly. For decades, he logged many miles in his daily pre-dawn runs, training for marathons and embracing the sheer joy of running. His dedication to running led him to become a volunteer for the Houston Marathon at its inception. Yogi never missed a marathon: he participated in virtually every aspect of the race and served as a member of the Marathon Board. He was a lifelong member of the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo, a member of the River Oaks Country Club, and St. Martin's Episcopal Church.
Yogi is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by Barbara Ivy Jogerst, his loving wife of 64 years; his daughter, Caroline Jogerst Sabin and husband, Bill; son, Allen L. Jogerst, Jr., and wife Judy Saroff Jogerst; five grandchildren: Colin, Finlay and Benjamin Sabin; Kristianna Jogerst Webster (Michael); and Aleksandr Jogerst.
A celebration of Yogi's life will be held on Saturday, October 28, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. on the south lawn of the Roy H. Cullen Running Trails Center, 7575 North Picnic Lane, Houston, TX 77007.
