Adine Holland
1920-2017
Adine Harrison Holland, 97, passed away Thursday, October 12, 2017 in Houston, TX. Beloved only child of Alexander and Bertha Feigelson Harrison, she was born in Houston on April 26, 1920, but lived her life in Wharton, TX where she was always an active part of community life.
Adine graduated from Wharton High School as valedictorian in 1937, and went on to graduate with highest honors from the University of Texas in 1941, where she was selected for Phi Beta Kappa in her junior year. On January 17, 1943 she married Arthur Holland of Beeville, who was then serving in the Army during World War II. After his army discharge in November 1945, Arthur and Adine made their home in Wharton, where he established a CPA practice with Adine's father, and they raised their two children, Libby and Gilbert.
Her life was devoted to her parents, husband, children, and grandchildren. She worked with Arthur in his practice and served as president of Wharton PTA, Shearith Israel Congregation Sisterhood, and Wharton Chapter of Hadassah. Family and friends enjoyed her homemade dill pickles and fig preserves, plus the wonderful desserts she loved to share. Adine was an avid sports fan who loved travel, bridge, baking, politics, and keeping in touch with lifelong friends and family. Having outlived most of her friends, she cherished connections with her friends' children and her children's friends. She was able to enjoy her last years in her home with the help of her team of kind, loving caretakers: Annette Irvin, Lottie Evans, Chivis Schooler, Marquita Johnson, Chasity Williams, and Brittney Sykes. Her sense of humor and sharp wit were with her to the end.
She is survived by her beloved children, Libby Marvins and husband Buz of Houston, and Gilbert Holland of Washington D.C., grandson Bryan Marvins of Houston, granddaughter Alyssa Marvins and great-grandsons Oscar Beck and David D. Seiler of Bastrop.
Graveside service will be held Sunday, October 15, 2017 at 1:30p.m. at Shearith Israel Cemetery, 1000 Barfield Road, Wharton., TX 77488.
