Aecie Denson Ewell

Faleceu

Arcie Ewell, 77, of Miami, passed away in the early morning hours of October 4, 2017 after many years of ill health at her family home in Jackson, Mississippi. She was born January 10, 1940, in Lena, Mississippi to the late Wiley and Ethel Lee (Lloyd) Denson.  She received a Bachelors degree in English from Jackson State University. She worked at Mixon Jr. High School and Utica Junior College in Utica, Ms., where she met and married her husband Clarence and where they were both instructors.  Arcie's passions in life were Jesus Christ, family, education, travel, raising plants (especially African violets) and children.  In 1969, she and Clarence brought those passions to a new home, Miami, FL.  She obtained a Master's degree in Reading in 1974 from University of Miami-one of the first women to do so-and was a lifelong Canes fan - attending football games in Miami and elsewhere...and making sure to have plenty of ironing to do as stress relief for the TV games. During her 48 years in Miami, Arcie put those passions to work in the service of God and the community. She taught at Florida Memorial College for many years before moving to Miami Dade Community College, where she worked in education and administration at the New World Center (Wolfson), Medical Center, & South (Kendall) campuses.  She spent 24 years at Miami Dade, and served as Dean for Administration 12 years prior to retirement. She was an advocate for Miami's children and worked with the Family Christian Association of America to build child day care centers in Little Haiti. Today, the Arcie D. Ewell Children's Place Headstart Center remains as a reminder of her dedication to all of Miami's youth. Throughout her life she put her faith in God and served him through her 43 year membership at Second Baptist church, teaching and serving as Sunday School Superintendent. She was also a charter member of the Second Baptist Community Development Corporation (SBCDC).     Arcie joined the Miami Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in 1978, serving the chapter faithfully in many roles from Corresponding Secretary to First Vice President-most notably, as Chapter Prresident from 1998 to 2002, a time of great growth and accomplishment for the chapter. She took her role seriously and gave freely of her talents and time tirelessly and with a joyous nature. In 2002, Arcie was Granted an "In The Company of Women" Mayors Award, which recognized women who bettered their community through volunteer service, profession or leadership roles.  In further recogintion of her community service, May 18, 2005 was officially designated Arcie Ewell Day by Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez. She was also active in the Richmond Heights Garden Club and Haitian Refugee Board.     She is survived by husband, Clarence of Miami Florida; her three children: Ken Ewell (Lisa) of San Antonio, TX; Keith Ewell of Los Angeles, CA; & Christie K. Ewell of Miami, FL; her grandchildren Lindsay and Ellery Ewell; Adopted daughter Janice Lucas (Carl) of Jackson, MS; sisters Mary 'Janie' Cage (Curtis) of Santa Clara, CA, Ester Watkins (Charles) of Ludlow, Ms., Lenora L. Johnson (Thomas) of Jackson, MS, & Clois Jean Slocum (Willie B.; adopted 'grandson' David Lucas (Jasmine) of Accokeek, Md.; godson Jamal Newman of Miami & goddaughter Pamela North-Bates of Tampa; nieces, nephews, cousins, family, & countless friends, former co-workers & sorority sisters. Our loss is great, but we are confident that she has gone on to a better place & are thankful that her health struggles of the past several years are behind her. Arcie will be eulogized and laid to rest on Thursday, Oct. 12 @11am at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church, Ludlow, Miss. Her body has been entrusted to Lakeover Memorial Funeral Home of Jackson, MS. Memorial service will be held on Saturday, Oct.14th @ 10 am at Second Baptist Church, 11111 Pinkston Dr., Richmond Heights.  In lieu of flowers family requests that donations be made in her name to: the Arcie Ewell Children's Place c/o Family Christian Association of America - 14701 NW 7th Ave., Miami, FL 33168-3103.
