Elizabeth "Betty" McAfeeAug 22 1924 - Sept 13 2017Betty McAfee was born in Ben Avon, PA to Ruth McAfee and George W Brown, the youngest of four children: George W Jr, Robert McAfee Brown, and Harriet Brown Baldwin. She obtained her BA from Wilson College, and did graduate work at Yale.
Betty was a special education teacher and avid photographer and videographer in the Berkeley schools, where she documented desegregation, helped create a model school integrating children with disabilities, and traveled and filmed the first trip of US teachers to China in 1973. After retiring, she completed a Masters at the University of Creation Spirituality, taught photography and created a multi-media memoir, "Waking Up".
She was the beloved mother of Tim, Prill, and Chris. She raised them with unconditional love with her husband of 25 years Malcolm McAfee. She spent the last 31 years until her death with Audrey Hazen. Between them they have 5 grown children, 8 grandchildren and 2 great grand-children.
Betty lived the last 11 years at the Redwoods retirement community in Mill Valley with Audrey, remaining active as a photographer, community leader and friend.
A memorial celebration of Betty's life will be held on Saturday, November 11 from 2-4 at Fernwood funeral home, 301 Tennessee Valley Road, Mill Valley. All are welcome. No flowers or gifts, please. She asks if so moved you donate to a cause of your choice.
