Abraham 'Abe' Elias Middle school teacher in Parsippany-Troy Hills, shared his love of the arts with his students and of Gilbert & Sullivan with his family, 89 Abraham "Abe" Elias, 89, of Frankford Township, N.J., peacefully passed away on Monday, Aug. 28, 2017, at Barn Hill Care Center in Newton, N.J. Abraham was born in Shenandoah, Pa., on July 26, 1928, and raised in Manchester, N.H. He served in the United States Army from 1949 to 1951 during the Korean War. Abe relocated to New Jersey in the early '60's, where he attended Newark State College and received his bachelor's degree. He worked as an English and Social Studies teacher at Parsippany Troy Hills Central Middle School for many years and was a member of MCREA, NJREA, NEA and in recent years, The Milford Garden Club. Growing up, he enjoyed music and singing with his brother and sister. During his high school years at Manchester Central, he had lead parts in Gilbert and Sullivan productions and shared that interest with his children and nephews. Abe was a well-loved and dedicated teacher who brought with him an enthusiasm and contagious energy both in and out of the classroom by introducing his students to an appreciation for literature, writing, music, theater and the beauty of the West through his photography. When he developed a passion for gardening, his room was lined with small greenhouses as part of an after-school activity. Searching for unique approaches to reach his students and his own children, he encouraged them to find the best in themselves and develop it. Always the teacher, he has left a legacy of lessons for a life well lived. Abraham was predeceased by his parents, Deeb and Rose (nee Abdennour) Elias; his sister, Lenda Persiko; and his brother, Leo Elias. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Sheila (nee Lynch) Elias; his daughter, Anne Elias; his son, Matthew Elias and wife Susie; his grandchildren, Cora Lane and Leonie Katharine, who were his greatest joy in recent years; and by his many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Parkinson Research Foundation, 15359 Broadway, Suite 1509, New York, NY 10018. A celebration of Abe's life will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Wood Funeral Home, 16 Main St., Branchville, N.J. 07826. Online condolences can be made at woodfuneralhome.net.
