Alexander Gabrielovich KorniushMarch 17, 1924 - August 25, 2017The family of Alexander Korniush regretfully announces that he passed away in his sleep on August 25, 2017. He was 93. He was the patriarch of our family and will be remembered for his love and support. He is preceded by his wife of 53 years, Vera Korniush. He leaves behind his four daughters: Victoria (Michael) Mackinnon, Natalie (Max) Amoroso, Valerie Webster and Nina (Mark) Howell. "Deda" will be especially missed by his grandchildren: Sean, Ariana (James), Tara, Joe, Gabriel and Kyra and great-grandson Henry Alexander.
Born in the Ukraine in March 1924, he served in the Ukrainian resistance against the Nazis in World War II. He was wounded and made a prisoner of war. In the immediate post-war period, he worked with the British Red Cross in Western Europe. He met his future wife Vera at a refugee camp in Hamburg, Germany. In 1954 they were married and made their first home in San Francisco.
He was a long time resident of Burlingame (39 years) and recently of Santa Rosa (9 years). He worked as a carpenter rising to the level of project supervisor at Herrero Bros., until his retirement. He cared about his numerous cacti, his bees (which he checked daily and generously shared the honey with family and friends) and was an avid duck hunter.
Services: Panihida on Monday August 28th at 7pm at the Church of All Russian Saints in Burlingame. The Funeral Service will be held Tuesday, August 29th at 10am at the Church. Interment is immediately following at the Serbian Cemetery in Colma.
The family wishes to thank Mary from Mission Hospice and staff at Atria Burlingame. In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes donations in his memory to the Brotherhood organization at either the Church of All Russian Saints in Burlingame or Sts. Peter and Paul Russian Orthodox Church in Santa Rosa, CA.
