Catherine 'Kay' O'Connell Gers Beloved mother of four and former teacher in Elizabeth, of Ocean Gate, 91 Catherine "O'Connell" Gers, 91, of Ocean Gate, N.J., died on Aug. 17, 2017. Visiting hours will be Sunday, Aug. 20, from 2 to 6 p.m., at the Mastapeter Funeral Home, 270 Atlantic City Blvd., Bayville, N.J. The funeral is Monday, 8:30 a.m., at the funeral home before celebrating a 9:30 a.m. Funeral Mass at St. Barnabas Church, Bayville. Burial is Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the New Jersey Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Wrightstown, N.J. Born in Bayonne, N.J., Catherine lived in Elizabeth, N.J., until moving to Ocean Gate in 1984 after summering there for many years. Kay was employed with Blessed Sacrament School in Elizabeth as teacher, secretary, and librarian. Kay was a very energetic person, active in St. Barnabas Church and their Altar Rosary Society; St. Barnabas Senior Club; the First Aid Squad Auxiliary, and the Civic Club, both of Ocean Gate, and the Red Hat Ladies. She also shared Christ's love through all the hand-crafted ribbon crosses she made for countless family, friends, and strangers. She was predeceased by her husband, Mike, in 2001. She was deeply loved by her four children, Nancy Tamas and her husband, Robert; Marilyn Cahill and her husband, Terrence; Barbara Theesfeld and her husband, Joseph, and Michael Gers and his wife, Geri; five grandchildren, Kelly Cahill Washbourne, Eric Theesfeld, Jeffery Theesfeld, Matthew Gers, and Emily Gers Roop, and four great-grandchildren, Shea, Brynn, Brayden Washbourne, and Grayson Roop. Kay will be greatly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing her. In lieu of flowers, donations in Kay's memory to (stjude.org), would be appreciated.
