HUGHES ALICE ANN STEPHENSON HUGHES (Age 85) A resident of Pennybyrn at Maryfield High Point, North Carolina died August 3, 2017 following a serious illness. A memorial service was held at 10 a.m. on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Pennybyrn in the Maryfield Chapel, 1315 Greensboro Road, High Point, North Carolina. A second memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, 2017 at National Funeral Home, 7482 Lee Highway, Falls Church, Virginia. Visitation with the family will be in the gathering area of the funeral home one-hour prior to the service and the burial will immediately follow. Alice was born on July 11, 1932 in Chicago, Illinois the daughter of Royal Grant Stephenson and Alice Irene Hunter. Alice enjoyed quilting and crocheting, making many items for her family and friends. She also enjoyed reading, collecting milk glass pieces, completing jigsaw puzzles, and playing pinochle. Alice's first job while still living with her parents was with the local phone company as a switchboard operator. Once married she devoted herself to raising her sons and taking care of her husband. In July of 1969 her family moved to Vienna, VA when her husband Bill took a Construction Supervisor job for his brother John J. Hughes at Hughes & Smith Inc. a commercial general contractor. Once the family was settled she started a career in department store retail sales and as a switchboard operator devoting many years to the department stores of the Tysons Corner area. In June of 2002 Alice and Bill moved to Greensboro, North Carolina to follow their son Jack and his wife Jody who had relocated to Greensboro earlier in Greensboro Alice was active in the local quilting guild and other crafts. Alice leaves behind her children Thomas (Teresa) Hughes of Warrenton, Virginia, Jeffrey (Wendy) Hughes of Gibsonville, North Carolina, John (Jody) Hughes of Greensboro, North Carolina. Her grandchildren include Hunter Hughes, Jackie (Rob) Harmon, Paige (Geoff) Whitney, Laura Hughes and Robert Hughes. Her great-grandchildren are Max, Nick, Oskar and Viggo Harmon; along with Peter and Louise Whitney. Alice was predeceased by her husband William Thomas Hughes, their son Robert Charles Hughes, her parents and her sisters Patricia Johnson, June Robinson and Barbara Shuecraft.
