LOPEZ-GOMEZ, ALFREDO A. M.D., 86, of Coral Gables, Florida passed away peacefully in his home on Tuesday, July 25th, 2017, after a quiet battle with cancer. Alfredo was born in Matanzas, Cuba in 1930 and emigrated to Miami in 1961. After having practiced medicine for years in Cuba, he repeated his residency and cardiology fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in Miami Beach so that he could continue practicing in the United States. Beloved by his patients for his warmth, thoughtfulness, and encyclopedic medical knowledge, Alfredo demonstrated an insatiable passion for medicine his entire career. He continued to see patients until the last two months of his life. Alfredo was well known in the South Florida medical community, having practiced at various local hospitals, including Mount Sinai, Victoria Hospital, Mercy, and Doctors Hospital. A perpetual academic and avid lecturer, Alfredo loved to learn and speak about various topics and advances in medicine; he had regularly delivered lectures to medical residents at Larkin Hospital until earlier this year. He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Maria Luisa; only daughter Dr. Ana L. Viciana and her husband Arturo Alvarez; granddaughter Ana Viciana Zapata and her husband Javier Zapata; grandson Enrique Alfredo Viciana and his fianc‚e Katerina O¤a; nephew Juan Carlos Pintado; and his lifelong companions, his sister-in-law and her husband, Elsa and Roberto Pintado. Freddy, as he was known to all, was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. Besides his family, his greatest joy was helping his patients. His smile was contagious, his good humor unending, and his patience extraordinary. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital in memory of Dr. Alfredo Lopez-Gomez.
