Anthony J. Di BonoSeptember 16, 1917 - May 9, 2017Tony passed away at home at age 99 just short of the century mark. While his death was eventually due to heart failure, Tony enjoyed an illness free life.

Dad/Uncle Tony/Gramps was the third of four children born to Pasquale and Mary Di Bono. Older brother, Joe Di Bono, older sister, Millie Passanisi, and younger sister, Lena Bernasconi pre-deceased Tony. Tony is survived by sons, Reno(Anna), Peter(Victoria) and James(Victoria). He was blessed with 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one great, great grandchild.

Born in San Francisco, Tony grew up on Folsom Street across from The Immaculate Conception Church in Precita Valley. He learned to play the accordion as a young man, and soon was playing neighborhood parties and dances. Family gatherings in Redwood City always included sing alongs with Uncle Tony supplying the music. He continued playing well into his 90s, entertaining at many senior facilities around The Bay Area.

Tony first saw his life partner, Celine Perol, in 1935 at a wedding reception on Capp Street, now The Community Music Center, in San Francisco. Although they didn't meet, if was love at first sight for Tony. Two years later, 1937, Tony happened to see Celine while he was driving on Army Street. He didn't let her get away this time and was able to learn her name. His younger sister, Lena, called Celine to introduce them. This led to a movie together and soon became steady dating. They were married on April 23, 1939, and remained happily married for 68 years.

The 1940s saw Tony partnering with big brother, Joe, operating the produce department at Paul's Market at 18th and Castro Streets. In the 1950s Tony and Celine opened Di Bono Grocery in The Outer Mission District in San Francisco. They later owned The California Wine Company at 14th and So Van Ness. The "wine shop" was a Saturday morning "Cheers" type gathering place for many of San Francisco's policemen, firemen, and Highway Patrol Officers.

Tony was athletic his entire life, "pumping iron" at Alex's, and trying karate when he was in his 70s. He is fondly remembered as a remarkable man who touched many lives along his way.

Tony and Celine took many family trips to Hawaii, countless Lake Tahoe outings, and were staunch supporters of their Catholic Faith. Tony coached baseball at St. Michael's and was recognized as Man Of The Year by The Catholic Youth Organization. The young athletes probably recall "the green van" rides to the games.

The family wishes to thank Sheila, Hazel, and Renante at A Family Affair in Redwood City, and Vitas Healthcare, for their kindness in caring for Tony.

Services and reception will be Thursday, May 18, 2017, 10:30 am, at Skylawn Memorial Park, Highway 92 & Skyline Blvd, San Mateo, CA 94402.
