Alan Ebersole WWII veteran, established Fanwood Recycling Center and coached Eagle Scouts, '80 years in Scouting,' 94 Alan Ebersole, 94, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at his home in Fanwood, N.J. Visitation will be held at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, on Sunday from 2 to 6 p.m., and on Monday from 11 a.m to 12 noon, with services at 12 noon. Interment with military honors will follow at St. Gertrude Cemetery in Colonia, N.J. For additional information or to sign the guestbook, visit fanwoodmemorial.com Born in Jersey City, N.J., Alan grew up in Westfield, N.J., and graduated from Westfield High School. After graduation, he joined the United States Army and served in the Aleutian Islands before being discharged from the Army Air Corps in 1945. After the war, he began a 38-year career with N.J. Bell and retired at age 60. After retirement, he established the Fanwood Recycling Center and was involved in operating the facility for 30 years until it closed last year. Alan was active in scouting most of his life. He established the BSA Troop 172 in Westfield and had assisted 105 scouts earn their Eagle Scout Award. He also helped establish the Flintlock group, a group of volunteers who took on repairs and maintenance of Boy Scout Camp Winnebago in Rockaway, N.J. He accrued over 80 years of service in Scouting. He was also a member of the American Legion Post 209 in Fanwood. He was predeceased by his wife, Eleanor, who died in 2009. Surviving are his son, Richard; his daughter-in-law, Nancy, and his granddaughter, Kristin.
