ALEXANDER GOLDENBERG  
Long-time Silver Spring, Maryland, resident Alexander Goldenberg, 99, died April 20, 2017. A memorial service for immediate family was held April 23 at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, Maryland. Mr. Goldenberg was born September 20, 1917, in Brooklyn, New York, to Louis and Bessie Goldenberg. In school, he was a gifted math and science student. He loved ham radio and built his own device as a teenager. During World War II, he served in the U.S. Navy as a radioman and proudly reached the rank of chief petty officer. After the war, he attended Brooklyn Polytechnic Institute. Mr. Goldenberg spent more than four decades working as a broadcast engineer for the Voice of America (VOA), first in New York City and then in Washington, DC. He fondly remembered shaking hands with famous VOA visitors, such as Eleanor Roosevelt, Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. Mr. Goldenberg was a life master bridge player, and was an active member of the bridge community at various senior centers in Montgomery County, Maryland. He was a life-long fan of jazz music. He was also a patient math tutor to his children. Mr. Goldenberg married Aleen Corbin Goldenberg in 1958. They met when they both worked for the VOA in New York City. He was preceded in death by his wife, Aleen. He is survived by daughters, Nadine Monaco (Michael) of Herndon, VA and Devin Rosenthal (Christopher) of Leesburg, VA; son, Adam Goldenberg (Barbara) of Richmond, VA; five grandchildren; and his sister, Shirley Levine of Albany, New York.
