Allen Chin Chairman of national marine engineering firm and Westfield elected official and civic leader recognized with awards for leadership and service, 80 Allen Chin, 80, former mayor and councilman in Westfield, N.J., passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 11, 2017, surrounded by his loving wife, Mary, and his family. Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, April 19, at Memorial Funeral Home, 155 South Ave., Fanwood, N.J. The funeral will take place at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 20, at First Baptist Church, 170 Elm St., Westfield, with interment to follow immediately afterwards at Fairview Cemetery, 1100 East Broad St., Westfield. For additional information, or to express condolences, please visit fanwoodmemorial.com. Mr. Chin was born in Duluth, Minn., raised in New York, N.Y., and resided in Westfield for over 50 years. Allen was a tireless and active member of the Westfield community. He served as mayor of Westfield (1979 to 1982), councilman (1974 to 1977) and as chairman of the Westfield Town Republican Committee. He was named UNICO's 1982 "Man of the Year" (Westfield chapter), Westfield Jaycees president (1971 to 1972) and their "Man of the Year" (1967 to 1968). He was instrumental in relaunching the Westfield Police Athletic League (PAL) in the mid 1970s and later served as a board member and president. Above all, he was a proud member of First Baptist Church of Westfield. Mr. Chin received a master of science in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology, a bachelor of science in mechanical engineering from Ohio University, and an associate degree in applied science from New York Community College. He was a professional engineer in New York, New Jersey, Delaware, and Virginia. He also attended the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration and Advanced Minority Business Executive Program at Dartmouth College. Mr. Chin was president and chairman of George G. Sharp, Inc., the country's oldest naval architectural and marine engineering organization, where he was employed for more than 58 years. He's won the U.S. Small Business Association's Entrepreneurial Success Award as well as their Small Business Person of the Year award. Mr. Chin was among the longest continuous serving commissioners of the Rahway Valley Sewerage Authority (RVSA), where he served five times as chairman and received an Outstanding Commissioner Award. He was a member of the board of trustees of UMDNJ (now Rutgers New Jersey Medical School) and one of the original founders of The Town Bank of Westfield. Allen will be dearly missed by Mary, his wife of 58 years; his daughter, Karen; sons Ken and his wife, Ellie, and Mike and his wife, Cristina, and his granddaughters, Amanda and Alyssa. In lieu of flowers, donations in Allen's memory can be made to First Baptist Church of Westfield or Westfield Police Athletic League (PAL).
