Barbara Jean Arena1940 – 2017Our "Sunshine" passed away unexpectedly at Mills Peninsula Hospital in Burlingame, California on April 12, 2017 after a brief illness. She was surrounded by her loving family.

A native of San Francisco, Barbara graduated from Balboa High School and began her first job as a banker at Bank of America where she met Jim, the love of her life and future husband of 57 years. She and Jim created a loving home for themselves and their four children in Colma. They moved to Burlingame in 1974 where they raised their family and joined a supportive community as parishioners at Our Lady of Angels for over 40 years. Their home away from home was Lake Tahoe and Barbara was blessed to have many summers together with not only her children but her grandchildren as well.

In the midst of raising her children, Barbara and Jim started their own sheet metal business. In addition to juggling both endeavors, she also loved entertaining, knitting, playing cards, arts & crafts and the SF Giants. She was an active member in a number of social clubs on the Peninsula. Because of her generous and altruistic spirit, she regularly volunteered for many great causes. However, the cause closest to her heart was bringing sunshine and warmth to the lives of her children and grandchildren who in return lit up her life with infinite joy.

Barbara is survived by her loving husband Jim and her three devoted children; Mark (Kate), Brett (Liz) and Ashley (Mike). She was preceded in death by her son Kirk. She leaves behind five dear grandchildren: Alex, Amanda, Kirk, Anika and Giovanna. She is also survived by her brother John (Kathy) Bianchi, her three nieces: Cezanne (Greg) Flowers, Georgia (Steve) Dempsey, and Jenny Spataro as well as 7 great nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Our Lady of Angels Catholic Church, 1721 Hillside Drive in Burlingame on Thursday, April 20th at 1:30 pm. There will be a 12:30 pm visitation with the family prior to the service. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation in Barbara's name to Grief Haven in support of families who have lost a child (http://www.griefhaven.org/donation.shtml) or a .
