Alfred AbrahamsohnFeb. 21, 1922 to Apr. 6, 2017Beloved husband of Mary Frances (McMillan) Abrahamsohn for 66 years; beloved father of Rosemary (West), George, Linda (O'Connell), Donna (McCurdy), Lori, Teresa, Paul and Michael. Treasured grandfather of 14, dear great-grandfather of 10. Loving uncle and great-uncle to many.
Born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany. Fled to England at age 17 to escape persecution. Joined the British army when he was 18 and moved to the US to be with his twin sisters when we was 27. Met his future wife, who was a dear friend of his sisters, when in San Francisco visiting them. Al and Mary soon married and started a family which grew to eight children by 1966. Al worked in San Francisco at Levi Strauss & Co, for 35 years. They lived in Colma until Al retired, then they moved to San Jose where Al began his 2nd career of volunteering throughout the community. Al loved children and had a very strong Catholic faith to which he converted after marriage. His faith and love of children and concern for the disadvantaged led him to volunteer for Holy Family Parish and many organizations that assisted children and those in need. Volunteer jobs included being a homework tutor, child care assistant, soccer coach, food preparer, ESL teacher, religious education teacher, emergency assistance distributor, classroom aide and summer camp assistant.
Al loved soccer which he coached and played well into his 80s. Al was known for his kindness, integrity, wit and good humor which kept his friends, family and himself laughing. His and Mary's marriage was full of love, faith and humor and has been an inspiration and example to countless people.
Preceded in death by his parents, Georg and Rosa Abrahamsohn; his sisters Betty Armstrong and Edith Harper; and his son Michael.
Services are: Visitation from 12 noon to 4 pm and Vigil/Rosary at 7:00 pm on April 11 at Oak Hill Cemetery, 300 Curtner Avenue in San Jose. Funeral mass will be at Holy Family Church, 4848 Pearl Avenue, in San Jose, at 10:30 am on April 12.
