Alan Douglas Carr
1958-2017
When there was a strong breeze in the air, Alan Carr got restless. An avid sailor, Alan found that being on the water offered the best of everything: solitude and peace, but also excitement and even fear. He loved to waterski, wakeboard or kiteboard. And he loved nothing more than a challenging regatta. He grew up in Houston, the son of a colorful oil and gas wildcatter, and the eldest of four brothers who treated the world as their backyard, freewheeling on bicycles and go-carts around Briargrove and Tanglewood. Alan and his brother Stuart followed their father into the family business until their father's death in 2000, when Alan accepted a role with El Paso Corporation, eventually joining TransCanada. He continued with the company for the balance of his career. Alan loved the Texas oil and gas industry, and delighted in its history and the entrepreneurial possibilities it offered. A consummate gentleman with a rebellious streak, his greatest joy was his wife of 32 years and his two children. "I want to be remembered for my love of family," he recently said. "Looking back at it, I have no regrets. I've had a great life." Despite his bout with cancer, he maintained an incredible sense of humor and positive outlook on life. Alan died peacefully at home on Feb. 18, 2017 in Houston, Texas at the age of 58. Alan was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard "Dutch" Carr and Helen Curtis, and his father-in-law Edmund Fisher. He is survived by his wife, Karen; daughter, Katie, and son, Cameron; brothers, Rodney (Stacy), Stuart (Kelli), and Leonard (Kim); and sister, Gina Richardson (Teddy). In addition, Alan enjoyed an extended family and was loved by his nieces, nephews and many treasured friends.
