Alfred Joseph Prosperi Retired butcher, best husband, father, and grandfather Alfred Joseph Prosperi, a resident of Nutley, N.J., for 62 years, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 4, 2017, at the age of 93. Family and friends may visit on Tuesday, Feb. 7, from 3 to 7 p.m. at the S.W. Brown & Son Funeral Home (swbrownandson.com), 267 Centre St., Nutley, N.J. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Bloomfield, N.J., at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, followed by entombment at Hollywood Memorial Park in Union, N.J. Known as "Big Al" to many, Alfred grew up in Newark, N.J., and became a butcher, opening his own store there at a very young age. It was there that he met the love of his life and future wife, Emily Nappa. He sold his first store and then opened another in East Orange, N.J. He then had his own meat concession at Caruso's Market in Newark and went on to work at Prosperity's Meat Market in Newark. The final stop of his long and successful career was working for his longtime buddy, Bobby Angelo, at Michael Angelo's Restaurant, also in Newark. Alfred was a member of the Italian American Club in Nutley and loved to play cards with his friends on Friday nights. He also loved to bowl and was part-owner of Hanover Lanes in East Hanover, N.J., for several years. A gentleman through and through, he led a wonderful life with his beloved wife of 67 years, Emily. Together, they loved going out on Saturday nights with their groups of friends. He always looked forward to family gatherings, holidays, working on his lawn, watching sports, and just being the best husband, father, and grandfather. Al was predeceased by his parents, Alfred and Gemma Prosperi; his brothers, Cesare and Frederick Prosperi, and his sisters-in-law, Josephine, Ruby, and Rachel Prosperi. In addition to his beloved Emily, Al is survived by his loving children, Carol Sciametta and her husband, Steve, and Ron Prosperi and his wife, Penny. He was the loving and proud "Papa" of his two cherished grandchildren, Gregory and Erica Sciametta, and also leaves behind the nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews who brought him so much joy during his life.
