ALVIN H. FOLTZ  
Went to be with the Lord on January 28, 2017. He was 93 years young. He was born in Elkton, VA on December 12, 1923. He was a long time resident of Arlington, Virginia for many years and maintained his home until he became ill in January, 2016 when he was hospitalized with a stroke. Since his illness, he had been living with his sister, Margaret Via, his nephew, Wayne Via, niece, Betsy Guay, and Alvin's nephew, Corbin Guay in Winchester, VA. Alvin was a high school graduate of Washington Lee High School and he graduated from college in North Carolina. He went to work for the United States government in 1943. He retired in 1985. He worked in the Maritime Commission independent agency reporting directly to the president. He was in the war shipping department of the Maritime Administration. He reported directly to the Secretary of Transportation under Elizabeth Dole. Alvin worked with and contracted with the shipyards for the construction of 5,000 or more merchant ships for use in the shipping of supplies and equipment to overseas operations. He served 41 years in the government. Alvin received many awards while working, amongst which was one government Bronze Medal, two Silver Medals, and his Service Pins for years in the government. These were presented by Admiral Emery S. Land, and by the Secretary of Commerce, Luther M. Hodges, and Secretary of State Elizabeth Dole.Alvin was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Lillian Foltz, father, Luther Martin Foltz, sister, Dorothy Thacker and brothers, Babe, David, Nolan, and Avis. He leaves behind many nieces, nephews and cousins.The family would like to extend their sincere appreciation to the Blue Ridge Hospice of Winchester for all their support, guidance, and care that they extended to Alvin. Funeral services were private and burial was in National Memorial Park in Falls Church, Virginia.
