Adrian Weiss

Faleceu

Adrian Weiss, beloved husband of Natalie, died on January 15 at the age of 99 at his home in the Pinecrest section of Miami. Adrian was intelligent and handsome, but it was his intense curiosity that set him apart. Everyone knew not to call him unless there was time to answer all the questions he would undoubtedly have. Born in NY, NY on June 11, 1917, Adrian was raised by devoted parents with his younger sister, Ruth. A graduate of Dartmouth College and the Harvard Business School, it was Dartmouth that made the biggest impression on him...so much so that he encouraged two of his nephews to go there. Years later he still cherished those memories, and was one of only three people to attend his class's 75th reunion. During World War II, Adrian was a captain in the Air Force who served as an Intelligence Officer in the Philippines. Afterwards Adrian moved to Long Island, where he built single-family homes, and owned and managed apartment buildings and a hotel. He was a licensed real estate broker, and an active investor. In 1956, Adrian met and married Natalie Friedman, a school nurse teacher who had been widowed with three daughters (Jeanne, Pam, and Nancy), whom they raised together. Adrian was previously married to and divorced from the late Dorothy Lyon, a marriage that had resulted in two daughters (Bonnie and Pat). Among their family's richest experiences was the year-long hosting of a French AFS student, Bertille Lyonnet, who shared Adrian's passion for politics. Both Adrian and Natalie consider her their sixth daughter. After retiring, Adrian and Natalie moved to Miami. They traveled abroad, and spent many summers in Hanover, NH, socializing with old college friends. The highlight for Adrian was sitting in on classes and getting to know the professors, which he also did at the University of Miami. Together they attended several Dartmouth Alumni College programs, as well as a summer session at Cambridge University. Deeply committed to the Democratic party, Adrian played an instrumental role as a precinct captain...registering voters and monitoring polls in Miami-Dade County. In early November, there was no hesitation about whom he wanted to vote for. Adrian and Natalie were formidable duplicate bridge competitors (Life Masters!). They were also tennis enthusiasts, making annual pilgrimages to Forest Hills, playing on doubles teams at the Royal Palm Tennis Club, and volunteering at what was then called the Lipton tournament. Adrian and Natalie were strong supporters of the Dartmouth Women's Tennis Team, whom they entertained at their home during the Team's Miami tournaments. Adrian had lifelong friends and a talent for making new friendships, connecting with people even after his diminished eyesight and hearing made that difficult. He had an unusually close and special relationship with his sister, who still refers to him as her 'hero.' Adrian's partnership with Natalie was extraordinary. They truly loved being together, and were seldom apart. Theirs was a 60-year romance. Survivors include his wife (Natalie Weiss), sister (Ruth Friendly), children (Jeanne Kusiak, Barbara Cooper, Pamela Friedman, Patricia Coll, and Nancy Ward), seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his beloved grandson, Matthew Kusiak. Adrian was buried on Sunday, January 22 during a private family ceremony in NY. At 2PM on February 5 there will be a Celebration of Life service at Temple Beth Am in Miami.
