Algernon M. Ellien Had long career in foreign exchange, former longtime Mendham resident Algernon M. Ellien, 90, longtime resident of Mendham, N.J., died peacefully on Monday, Jan. 23, 2017, after a long illness at Juniper Village in Chatham, N.J. A viewing will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. on Jan. 27 at Bailey Funeral Home, 8 Hilltop Road, Mendham. The funeral service will take place at Holy Trinity Orthodox Church at 10 a.m. on Jan. 28, 120 Dover-Chester Road, Randolph, N.J., followed by interment at Hilltop Cemetery, Mendham. Born Oct. 4, 1926, in South Brownsville, Pa., he was the son of Julia Salem and Baydeh (Bady) Ellien. He was raised in Park Slope, Brooklyn and was graduated from Brooklyn Tech High School. He served in the Navy from Sept. 9, 1944 through June 28, 1946 in the Pacific Theatre of Operation. Medals received were the American Theatre Medal, Victory Medal and Asiatic Pacific Medal. Upon his return, Mr. Ellien attended Long Island University and he was employed by Bank of America as a foreign exchange dealer until June 1961. While there he met his future wife, Isabella C. Ruggiero. They were married on Feb. 14, 1954. Encouraged by the support of Isabel and her parents, M. Ellien left the bank to join a small foreign exchange company which would later become known as Noonan, Astley and Pearce Inc. on June 28, 1961. As the executive vice president, he retired in 1991. Isabel and Al moved to Mendham in 1975 where they enjoyed 50 years of marriage until her death in 2004. He remained a resident of Mendham until January 2014. Survivors include: two daughters, June E. Ellien and her husband, Michael J. Cunniff of Bluffton, S.C. and Barbara A. Ellien Wyne of Severna Park, Md.; two sons, John D. Ellien and his wife, Trudi, of Chatham, N.J., and Michael G. Ellien and his wife, Pinar, of Houston, Texas; seven grandchildren, Jeb and Lindsey Wyne of Severna Park, Michael K. and Alexander P. Ellien of Houston, Colleen N. Schirf and her husband, Kevin, of New York City, Emily O'G Moulton and her husband,Tim, of Newport, R.I., and three great-grandchildren, Owen and Grady Schirf and Finley Moulton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Holy Trinity Orthodox Church (Pastoral Fund) or VNA Hospice of Northern New Jersey.
