Abbie J. Christie Berkeley Heights resident who gave time as church deacon, first-aider, Scout leader Abbie J. Christie, 78, of Berkeley Heights, N.J., passed away Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016, at Overlook Medical Center. Relatives and friends are invited to attend the memorial service on Saturday, Jan. 14, at 11 a.m. at the Westminster Presbyterian Church, 725 Mountain Ave., Berkeley Heights, N.J. Abbie was born in Brick Township, N.J., to Gerard and Marion McDonald and grew up in Jersey City, N.J. She had been a resident of Berkeley Heights since 1965 and was an active member of the Westminster Presbyterian Church for 50 years, where she served as a deacon and elder. Abbie was a member of the Berkeley Heights Volunteer Rescue Squad for over 20 years, volunteered with the Girl Scouts for over 30 years, and taught swimming at the YWCA. She also belonged to a quilter's group which made beautiful quilts to donate to charity. Baking cookies with her grandchildren was one of the things she enjoyed most. Abbie is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, David Christie; their three children, Thomas Christie, Andrew Christie and his wife, Catalina, and Kathleen McDermid and her husband, John. She was the cherished grandmother of Tommy, Timmy, Giovi, and David Christie and Jack, Allyson, and Danielle McDermid.
