Alden Marshall Cohen, 82 years young, magician and teacher, was born in Chicago on April 30, 1934 to Lawrence Irmas Cohen and Myra Littmann Cohen. He grew up in Hyde Park with his late brothers Millard Stuart Cohen and Ellis Loren Cohen. He graduated from Carleton College and the University of Chicago Business School. A lifetime of service began-while still in high school- when he volunteered with the American Red Cross, which he proudly continued for over 65 years, teaching hundreds of classes, and thousands of students First Aid, CPR, AED, lifesaving, and community preparedness. He was one of the few certified Instructor Trainers in the Midwest, and taught classes as far away as Racine and Rockford. He achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in high school which led to his active participation in Scouting for over 30 years. He enlisted in the US Army after graduating from college and was awarded the Army Commendation Ribbon for his service. Alden was employed by Bagcraft LLC for over 40 years, retiring as Vice President of Sales and Marketing. After retiring, he was involved in emergency management and response training and disaster response operations, including Hurricane Katrina resettlement activities with the Red Cross and City of Evanston. He was an active volunteer for 10 years with the City of Evanston Police Department and Evanston Community Emergency Response Team and was recognized as the Evanston Senior Volunteer of the Year in 2006 and Evanston's Spirit of Service Award in 2011. He acquired English as a Second Language certification and volunteered with Literacy Chicago for over 10 years, teaching immigrants of all ages English, American culture, history, and civics. Later in life he devoted himself to caring for his mother and mother-in-law, showing compassion, love, and attention when they needed him most. Alden is survived by his loving wife Suzanne Zoloto Cohen, with whom he shared 55 happy and fulfilling years in Chicago and Evanston, his children Adam (Rosa Louie) Cohen, Laura (Mike Seale) Cohen, and Jordin (Bev Mann) Cohen, grandchildren Noam, Lev, Ronen, and Ilan Louie-Cohen, Lily and Elliot Gross, and Naomi, Tali, and Ben Cohen, his sister-in-law Sally Grant Cohen (Ellis) and many nieces and nephews.
