Alberto R. Alcala passed away on December 17, 2016. Known to his friends as Abet, he was born November 21, 1936 in Candelaria, Quezon province in the Philippines. The youngest of 10 children, Abet was an avid youth mentor, and basketball player. He led Candelaria's semi-pro basketball team to the province championship. In addition to basketball, Abet loved fishing, gardening, cooking, dancing, reading and spending time with friends and family.
He married Erlinda Verdan on April 13, 1959. Working full time while attending college, he graduated from Mapua Institute of Technology in Manila with a degree in Mechanical Engineering. Soon after graduation, he was recruited by the Boeing Aerospace company; and in 1968 moved his wife and four daughters to Seattle WA to work for Boeing. Abet finished his career with a successful 23 years at the US Federal General Services Administration as a construction manager, where he championed a unique method of teamwork still utilized today by the federal agency.
In his retirement, Abet and fellow Candelaria expatriates founded Candelaria Quezon International (CQI) in 2009. Abet served as President of CQI (2009-2016), a nonprofit organization dedicated to funding educational programs, student scholarships and medical missions to provide medical supplies and services to Candelarians.
Abet was known for his incredible generosity, a passion for bringing people together to strengthen community, and his selfless devotion to family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He is survived by his wife Erlinda of 57 years, four daughters, Aleli, Marie, Amy, Marife; and 6 grandchildren, Mackenzie, Nathaniel, Samantha, Joey, Robert and Emma.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, December 30 at 11:00 am preceded by a viewing and a rosary prayer at 10:00 am, both at Evergreen Washelli, 11111 Aurora Avenue N., Seattle, WA 98133. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible donations in his memory may be made to Candelaria Quezon International (CQI) c/o Rodita S. de Alday, Treasurer, 34421 Red Rover Mine Road, Acton, CA 93510.
