Alison Parker

Alison Parker1955 - 2016From the moment she was born, Alison was a fighter, and an independent soul who went her own way. A talented artist in a variety of media, a seeker of truth and insight, a fierce lover of animals, a woman who ran her own business until her ten-plus-year fight with ovarian cancer made it impossible… She lived her life, setting her goals, making her lists, reading, learning, always moving forward.
She graduated from San Leandro High in 1974 while working at the San Leandro Johnson's Drug Store and Longs Drugs. She later worked the night-shift at UPS while pursuing a degree in graphic design/art at the San Francisco Art Academy during the day.
Born and raised in the Bay Area but a New Yorker "at heart," she was determined to move to New York City once she obtained her degree… and, in 1987, she did. Alison worked at various advertising and art agencies before becoming a graphic designer and, later, a manager at Pfizer Pharmaceuticals in Manhattan. From Gramercy Park to the Upper West Side to Brooklyn, every place she lived, she made friends, both human and the four-footed variety. She bought into the first high-rise coop development along the Long Island City waterfront, ignoring the nay-sayers who asked, "Why are you moving there?" She was proud of her one-bedroom abode with its view of the East River and Manhattan skyline. She quit Pfizer to focus on her art and eventually started a dog-walking business, Parker's Pals. When ovarian cancer struck in 2004, she struck back, forcing it into remission twice, fighting hard to live life as she wanted.
For all of us—family and friends—our world is smaller, darker, now that the light that was Alison is gone. Pre-deceased by parents Corinne and Donald Parker, Alison is survived by brothers and sister Joel, Steve, and Ann; sisters- and brother-in-law Kim, Jamuna, and Bill; nephews and niece Jake, Ian, and Devyn; her beloved cats Zuzu, Joey, and Jill (all lovingly re-homed); and many friends who remember her and her creativity, drive, sense of humor, I've-got-your-back attitude, kindness, and determined search for self.
"Blackbird singing in the dead of night
Take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life
You were only waiting for this moment to arise."
—Blackbird, The Beatles
