Alice Catherine Barbiere Passionate environmentalist was active in her community Alice Catherine Barbiere (nee Schneider) passed away on Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, at the age of 68. She passed peacefully in her home following a courageous four-year battle with breast cancer. Alice's Life Celebration will be held on Friday, Dec. 2, from 3 to 8 p.m. at Gray Funeral Directors, 318 E. Broad St., Westfield, N.J. Please visit grayfuneralhomes.com to view her life tribute. A 40-year resident of Westfield, N.J., Alice was an active member of the community; she sang in the Chansonettes choir and was fondly remembered for her participation in the annual Washington Elementary School shows. Alice, through her role in La Leche League International, also worked as an advocate for breastfeeding and child care around the world. Growing up in Clark, N.J., Alice graduated from Kean University with her bachelor's and master's degrees in fine arts. Most recently, she proudly worked as the accountant for Two Ton Brewing Co., a family-owned and operated business. Her interests included music, the arts, needlework, reading, and the outdoors. Alice is survived by her devoted husband of 49 years, Dr. Mario C. Barbiere, and their four loving sons, Jim, Chris, Mike, and Matthew. Alice was also blessed with the love of two daughters-in-law, Mairin and Jackie, and two grandchildren, Kaleb and Kaia. Additionally, Alice is survived by her loving siblings, Jim Schneider, John Schneider, Janice Midgley, and Carol Sereda. Alice was a lover of nature, and passionately devoted to protecting the environment. As such, in lieu of flowers, the Barbiere family will be collecting donations for the restoration of the rhododendron garden at the Watchung Reservation. Any checks made out to "The County of Union" and mailed to 519 Lenox Ave., Westfield, N.J., will be utilized for this purpose.
