Husband, father and grandfather, former diner owner and chef
Alfred Josef Welte, 90, of New Providence, N.J., and Spring Lake, N.J., passed away peacefully in his home on March 11, 2020.
Alfred was born on Sept. 12, 1929, in Ahausen, Germany (Bodensee). He was a blacksmith by trade and worked for Allgäuer-Porsche. In 1959, at 30 years old, he emigrated to America for a job opportunity from his Uncle Fritz Welte. He met his wife, Helga Winther, also from Germany (Insel-Fohr), in New York, and they were married in 1964 and had two daughers, Marlene and Janet.
Together, Helga and Alfred owned the Miss America Diner for 30 years. Later, Alfred worked for 25 years at the Short Hills Hilton as a breakfast chef. Alfred loved to spend time with Helga at their home in Spring Lake.
Alfred is survived by his beloved wife, Helga Welte. His daughter, Marlene, preceded him in death in 2014. She died of ALS and he missed her deeply. Alfred is also survived by Marlene's husband, Tom Fraehmke, and grandson, Christian Fraehmke, of New Providence; and his loving daughter, Janet Rusyniak and her husband, Dr. Daniel Rusyniak, and grandchildren, John Alex, Julia, and Leo, all of Zionsville, Ind. He is also survived by his dear sister, Sofie and her family in Bodensee, Germany, and Insel Fohr, Germany.
There will be a private service for the family at St John's Lutheran Church, Summit, N.J. His ashes will be placed in the church's memorial garden with his daughter, Marlene.
