Faith and family were the most important parts of her life
Claire Speth Ditzel passed away peacefully at home on July 29, 2019.
Claire was born in Bayonne, N.J., to Reuben and Helen Speth on March 12, 1920. She was raised in Roselle Park, N.J, graduating from Roselle Park High School in 1938. She attended Union County Junior College in Roselle for two years and then entered St. Elizabeth Hospital School of Nursing, where she graduated as a registered nurse in 1943.
Her professional career began at E.I. DuPont de Nemours in Linden, N.J., where she met her husband. She settled in Cranford, N.J., where she raised six children. Claire loved being a homemaker; cooking and baking were her specialties. She was involved in the activities of her children, especially Girl and Boy Scouts.
She returned to her profession in 1960, as an office nurse for Joseph E. Mast, M.D., a pediatrician in Elizabeth, N.J. In 1965 she joined the staff of the Cranford Visiting Nurse Association, serving patients in Cranford, Garwood, and Kenilworth.
Upon disbandment of the agency, she began serving as home care coordinator at Muhlenberg Hospital in Plainfield, N.J., retiring from that position in 1987.
She volunteered at Elizabeth General Hospital, Chemo-Care (now Cancer Hope Network), and Meals on Wheels.
Claire was deeply religious and devoted to the Rosary. She believed in the power of prayer, and was a member of the prayer network at The Church of St. Anne in Garwood and St. John The Apostle Church in Linden. Aside from her faith, the most important part of her life was her family.
Claire was predeceased by her husband, Louis Ditzel Sr.; her son, Louis Ditzel Jr.; daughter, Susan Ditzel; and grandson, Daniel Byrnes.
She is survived by daughters, Claire Del Gandio (Frank), Diane Paul (Richard), Rebecca Kolar, and stepdaughter, Mary Lou Hillen (Bernard). She will be missed by her 14 loving grandchildren and 30 cherished great-grandchildren.
Arrangements by Dooley Funeral Home, 218 North Ave.West, Cranford, N.J. Viewing will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10a.m. Thursday, Aug. 1, at The Church of St. Anne, 325 2nd Ave., Garwood, N.J. Burial will follow the Mass at St. Gertrude's Cemetery in Colonia, N.J.
